I will never forget the day that Mitch brought her home. It was September of 2008. Septemberfest was going on in town. It was a Saturday afternoon. Mitch came home with some friends and a puppy, saying a girl was giving her away and asked if he could keep her. Ted was working an afternoon shift that day. I told Mitch he’d have to ask Ted. When loving on her in my lap I noticed she was covered in fleas. Whether we were keeping her or not we had to treat her fleas. We go and get some flea treatment and also scramble around trying to find a crate so we could keep her in the garage. Hours later we have her treated, all snuggled into a crate . Mitch put a blanket and a small DVD player in the crate so she wouldn’t be lonely. About 11:30 pm Ted arrives home. Mitch decides to let him enjoy a beer before he asks him. He finally works up the nerve to ask him and Ted immediately says no. Mitch was crushed and headed out to the garage. Then Ted asked me what I had told him. I told him that he had to ask Ted because we had a dog previously and they didn’t help to take care of him. But then I said, in their defense, they were a lot younger back then. So then Ted says, let’s go out and see her. Once in the garage he’s petting her and says, “She is pretty cute.” That was all it took. She was ours.
She has been such a great dog. We all fell in love with her. When the grandbabies came along she was always so gentle with them. They could climb all over her and she never once nipped at them. She just became very protective over them.
When Ted passed, she was a huge part of our healing.
She loved spending time at Shirley’s house and she loved chasing the squirrels! Boy did she love the squirrels! She also loved riding in the car. (she preferred the front seat) Her bark sounded so mean but she wouldn’t hurt anyone. She would’ve licked them to death. She also loved messing with the cats. She loved to lay by your feet too. No matter where I was or what I was doing, she was always right there. We sure will miss that sweet girl! We are so grateful to have had her in our lives for 12 1/2 years. See you in Heaven Maia! ❤️❤️❤️
