Lucy came into my life at only 10 hours of age. Abandoned by their mother, she and her littermate were found on the front porch of my younger daughter’s best friend. My daughter, Rosie, and I adopted Lucy while her littermate stayed with her friend. Rosie and I bottle fed Lucy and wiped her bottom – something that Lucy vigorously objected to. Rosie had to put on thick gloves to protect her when cleaning the tiny kitty. Lucy was the size of my flip phone and weighed the same as a Poptart. I took her to work so I could feed and clean her every two hours. For the first few weeks, she came to class with me in my lab coat pocket. My daughter took the night shift. I was so worried that she wouldn’t survive but she became a loving, healthy cat who lived one full week after her 17th birthday. She met me at the door whenever I came home, loved sitting on my lap and slept with me at night. I miss her so much.
